my olympian.

there he is.

in the spirit of the olympics (& in the wake of the upset in men's hockey today, against Canada. . . if you care,)
i want to post about hockey from a MOM'S perspecitve, this olympic season.
today was the last day, of my oldest son's FIRST hockey season.
WHAT an event it was.
jack was OFF-THE-WALL excited about this day.
they announce each little 'mini-mite' (all 4 & 5 year-olds,) by name & under the big spotlight, at the start of the game.
i whispered to my husband, 'you KNOW he's going to fall, he's going to be skating so hard & fast with excitement when he comes out on to the rink!'
(and i'm going to cry when that happens.  not because he'll fall, but because i know how EXCITED he is, how SERIOUS he's taking this day & how MUCH he wants to be the best & skate his hardest.  he is my son, after all.  :)
and sure enough.  barreling out of the gate, skating like he's being chased, he takes a digger.
brian & i just looked at each other.  ugh!
but he's up before i can shed a tear. . .on his feet, skating to the finish!
'#20!!!  JACKSON WESTERHAUS!'
adorable.  oh, this is what being a mom is all about.
filled with overwhelming pride.  O-V-E-R-W-H-E-L-M-I-N-G.
they 'scrimmaged.' as much as 4 & 5 year-olds can 'scrimmage,' but it was SO fun to watch.  and it hit me.  on the last day. . .
this is just the beginning.  he LOVES this!  this brings him SO much joy.  it's all he thinks about, does, plays.
the first thing he does in the morning is watch reruns of old WILD games or the TEVO-ed USA Olympic hockey games while i make breakfast.  over & over.  when he's bored, he takes my oven mitts (goalie pads) & makes gracie throw balls at him & tries to stop them.  when mommy can't take the noise anymore, he goes in to the basement & shoots against the wall.  and when THAT isn't enough, he shoots out in the driveway, -30 weather & all.
it's in his blood.
and i can't stop it.  all we can do is support it.  as far as he wants to take it.  whether it's one more year or into high school.  it's SO fun to watch.
but the BEST part of the day, was after our little 'end-of-the-season-hockey-party' with the grandparents, a long day of shuffling kids around, missed naps (including mommy's,) a long weekend of craziness, getting everything ready for our big guys' big day, i plopped down on the couch to catch my breath.
jack comes up to me carrying his medal he won.
'here mom.  this is for you.'
'what?  this is your medal!  why are you giving it to me???'
'you deserve it.  i don't need it.'
???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  tears, tears, tears.
what could be better?
the proudest moment.
(and i took a FANTASTIC nap with that medal around my neck.)

i'm officially a hockey mom & i'll LOVINGLY put those stinky breezers on him for each game.
